Netravati Trek

Netravati Trek is one of the most popular trekking destinations in South India. In recent years, it has gained significant attention as an excellent alternative to the Kudremukh Trek .

Located in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka, the Netravati Trek lies between Samse and Belthangady. Similar to Kudremukh, Netravati is also a mountain peak, although it is less explored. The trek derives its name from the Netravathi River, which begins at the foothills of the mountain. This trek is known for offering breathtaking views from start to finish. Vast stretches of rolling shola grasslands surround the trail, creating a scenic landscape throughout the journey. From the summit, trekkers can enjoy a panoramic view of the nearby towns around Belthangady. The Netravati Trek is suitable even for physically fit beginners. While it is beginner-friendly, it still challenges your stamina and endurance, making it an enjoyable experience for both new and experienced trekkers. Like you, we are passionate about trekking, which is why we've documented this trek in detail to help you complete it on your own.

Good to know: A Karnataka Forest Department permit is mandatory for this trek and cannot be issued on the spot. It's included in this package — you only need to carry a valid photo ID.

A quieter alternative to the popular Western Ghats trails

Netravati doesn't get the crowds that Kumara Parvatha or Tadiandamol see on a regular weekend. The trail is shorter and more manageable than nearby Kudremukh Peak, while still delivering the same dense forest, open grassland, and summit-view payoff that draws people to this part of the Ghats.

What Stands Out
A genuine forest trail — shola woods, grassland ridges, and cloud-level views, without the queue of trekking groups you'll find on more famous peaks nearby.
No Hidden Permit Cost
Several operators quote a lower base price and add the forest permit separately. Ours is built into the ₹5,500 — what you see is what you pay.

Best Time To Do Netravati Trek

Conditions on this trail change a lot by season — here's an honest breakdown so you can pick the right window for what you want out of the trek.

Best
October – February

Clear skies, cool temperatures (8°C–18°C), and the best summit visibility of the year. The safest window for first-time trekkers.

Good, with caution
June – September

Monsoon brings out the deepest greens and rolling mist that draws dedicated monsoon trekkers. Trails get slippery and leeches are active — good grip shoes and a guide are essential.

Avoid
March – May

Hot, dry, and dusty, with the grasslands at their least scenic. Water sources along the trail also run low.

Netravati Trek Route Breakdown

The summit is roughly 6.5–7 km one way (12–14 km round trip on the same path back down).

0 – 1.5 km · Trailhead to bamboo groves

A gentle warm-up walk through bamboo and mixed forest near the base.

1.5 – 3.5 km · Shola forest ascent

A steady climb under dense canopy — the quietest, coolest stretch of the trail.

3.5 – 5 km · Open grasslands

The forest breaks into rolling grassland with the first wide views of the surrounding valleys.

5 – 6.5 km · Final ridge climb

The steepest, rockiest section, with a couple of false summits along the way — this is where the trek earns its "moderate" rating.

Summit

A 360° view across the Western Ghats. On a clear winter morning, you can often see a sea of clouds settled in the valleys below.

Departure night doesn't count as one of the two days — you spend exactly one night at the base camp, after the trek.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Netravati trek package cost?

₹5,500 per person from Bangalore, all-inclusive — transport, 1 night's stay, meals, a certified guide, and the forest permit. Group discounts apply for 10+ people.

Where exactly is Netravati Peak located?

In the Kudremukh forest range, Chikmagalur district, near Kalasa and Samse. The road route passes through Sakleshpur, but the trek and permit checkpoint are in Chikmagalur, not Hassan.

How far is it from Bangalore?

Around 320–330 km, roughly 7–8 hours by road. We depart overnight so you arrive fresh and ready to trek the next morning.

Is this trek suitable for beginners?

Yes — it's rated moderate. Beginners with basic fitness manage it comfortably; the final steep stretch to the summit needs some effort but no technical skills.

Is the forest permit included in the price?

Yes. The permit is mandatory and pre-arranged as part of your ₹5,500 package — no separate charge at the checkpoint. You just need a valid photo ID.

When is the best time to do this trek?

October to February for the clearest views and safest trails. June to September (monsoon) is lush and popular with monsoon trekkers but slippery, with leeches — go with a guide and proper shoes. March to May is hot, dry, and the least scenic.

Are there wild animals on the trail?

The forest has deer, wild boar, and occasional leopard activity, but encounters on the main trail are rare in a guided group. Stay with your guide and on the marked path.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Message us on WhatsApp as early as possible — rescheduling to another batch is usually possible if there's enough notice before departure, but forest permits are date-specific, so last-minute changes may not always be accommodated.
